Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Wednesday 22.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Heavy snow showers and strong winds from W-NW have formed unstable wind slabs in the alpine. The winds slabs are slowly stabilized, but it might still be easy to trigger avalanches in the fresh windslabs on Wednesday, before a new storm is on its way on Thursday.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 21. January 2020

Mildvær og nedbør som regn på mandag fuktet opp snødekket opp til 800 - 1000 moh, men tirsdag går snøgrensen ved havnivå og det legger seg nysnø over det gamle, gjennomfuktete snødekket. Over tregrensen fører kraftig vind til stor snøstransport over i leområder.

Det ligger generelt mest snø i øst og nordøstvendt terreng.

Mountain weather

Tuesday 21. January 2020

15 mm precipitation, up to 21 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from west, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the evening. -5 °C to 1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 22. January 2020

4-7 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the evening. -7 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
